Capital Area Food Bank

The Capital Area Food Bank is here to support the large number of our neighbors who have been impacted by recent reductions in federal jobs and funding. Beginning on Saturday, April 5th, the food bank will be holding new pop-up food distributions twice a week. These pop-up distributions will offer pantry items and fresh produce on Thursdays from 5 – 7 pm and Saturdays from 9 – 11 am, or while supplies last each day. The distributions can be found in the parking lots of the following retail locations:

District of Columbia

  • Safeway: 322 40th Street NE in Ward 7
  • Giant: 1535 Alabama Ave SE in Ward 8

Maryland

  • Giant: 7074 Allentown Road in Camp Springs, Maryland
  • Safeway: 7546 Annapolis Road in Lanham, Maryland

Virginia

  • Giant: 6364a Springfield Plaza in Springfield, Virginia
  • Safeway: 4215 Cheshire Station Plaza in Dale City, Virginia

Those in need of food assistance can learn more about these pop-up food distributions, as well as how to access support at other times and locations, by going to capitalareafoodbank.org/dmv-help. Please help us to spread the word by sharing the link as well as the times/locations of these new food distributions.

This first phase of pop-up distributions, which will run through June, is responsive to the immediate needs of our neighbors who are beginning to feel the financial strain of a lost paycheck and are having trouble putting food on the table. Out of a desire to act quickly, we are funding this first phase through private philanthropic investment. We expect, however, that this need will not diminish in the coming months and in fact is likely to grow more severe. We are therefore hopeful that each jurisdiction in our region will consider supporting the next, medium-term response that will run from July 1 through the following June. While we recognize that we are in a difficult budget climate, we ask for your partnership in helping to support the most basic needs of our neighbors during this extraordinarily challenging time for so many.
